Digital Radiography (X-rays)
Radiographs (commonly referred to as "X-rays"), are the most common form of imaging used by veterinarians. Taking a radiograph involves exposing your pet to a beam of x-rays and recording a picture of their distribution as they pass through your pet. They are particularly useful for diagnosing several diseases and disorders such as fractures, arthritis, heart disease and pneumonia. However, not all diseases and conditions are apparent through x-rays. This is the reason your veterinarian may recommend other types of imaging. As for the radiation, don’t worry: the amount of radiation your pet is exposed to during x-rays is minimal and harmless. If you see your technician or doctor wearing protective gear, it is only because they are taking a precaution against accidental repeated exposure to themselves.
Here at Harborview Animal Hospital we have an on-site, state-of-the-art digital radiology suite (DR X-Ray). Whether it is routine, or an emergency, we generally have finalized radiographs in less than 15 minutes.
In addition, we have the option to have radiographs reviewed by Board Certified Radiologists through VetRad and a detailed report is generally available in less than two hours following image obtainment. A copy of the radiographs and/or radiology report will be provided upon client request.
